Dealing with Broken Braces: What to Do Now

A quick guide from The Brace Place — Specialist Orthodontists in Cross Hills

Orthodontic appliances are built to be strong — but occasionally, brackets come loose or wires pop out of place. While this isn't usually an emergency, knowing how to respond can help keep your treatment on track and avoid unnecessary discomfort.

What Should You Do?

  • Stay Calm: Broken braces are rarely serious. It’s uncomfortable, but fixable.
  • Check the Damage: Look in the mirror to see what’s come loose or where the wire is poking.
  • Use Orthodontic Wax: Cover any sharp edges or wires with orthodontic wax to protect your mouth and reduce discomfort. You can find it at Boots and other large chemists.
  • Saltwater Rinses & Pain Relief: A warm saltwater rinse can soothe irritation. If needed, use over-the-counter pain relief.
  • Don’t Trim Wires Yourself: Avoid cutting wires at home — it can do more harm than good.
  • Contact Your Orthodontist: For our patients, please let us know about the issue as soon as possible using the form below and please include photos if possible. Don’t wait until your next scheduled appointment.
